Scale and accuracy are two related terms that are often misunderstood leading to surveys being completed with the wrong amount of detail making them unfit for purpose. Scale should give an indication to whoever is undertaking the survey of the level of accuracy that is required.

The following table shows the increasing of accuracy of the detail needed as scale increases.

Ensure that you specify exactly what it is that you require. It is a common mistake to base the building footprint on the Ordnance Survey 1:1250 mapping causing many problems. This data is not suitable for accurately surveying the building interior based on this footprint. Use the OS data where appropriate - e.g. to show the building in the context of neighbouring buildings and features.

Think about the following when commissioning and specifying measured building surveys:-

Timescale Cost
Is this always the fault of the client?

Quality
The level of detail is critical to the cost.

Level Playing Field
Aesthetically pleasing or accurate? Why compromise?

Feedback
Do you indulge, or not consider this to be important?
